Dr Derry Mercer

I am a microbiologist with over 30 years’ experience in biological sciences, including more than 20 years dedicated to antimicrobial drug discovery and development. I have led antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral programmes, advancing candidates from early concept through to clinical trials.

My work is driven by a commitment to translating scientific innovation into real-world impact, particularly in addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance. Alongside my consultancy, I support emerging ventures through my role with INCATE, helping shape the next generation of anti-infective therapies. I previously led the Antimicrobials Programme at Bioaster, working across industry and academia to accelerate the development of novel treatments.

I contribute to international initiatives including CLSI, EUCAST and the BEAM Alliance, and I am a Visiting Professor at Robert Gordon University. I have authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and hold a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Liverpool.
